Area
- CBSE · NCERT Class 6, Ch 6 Perimeter and Area
Area is the amount of flat surface a shape covers, measured in square units such as cm² or m².
Area tells you how much space is inside a boundary. Picture covering a shape with unit squares, each 1 cm by 1 cm. The number of squares needed is the area in cm². That is why area is always in square units.
Area and perimeter are different. A 4 cm by 4 cm square and a 7 cm by 1 cm strip have the same perimeter, 16 cm. Their areas are 16 cm² and 7 cm².
- Rectangle: area = length × breadth.
- Square: area = side × side.
- Triangle: area = 1/2 × base × height.
A small example
A room floor is 6 m long and 5 m wide. Tiles cost 600 rupees per square metre. The area is 6 × 5 = 30 m². The cost is 30 × 600 = 18,000 rupees.
Watch the units. If the room is given as 600 cm by 500 cm, change to metres first. Otherwise the area comes out as 3,00,000 cm², and the cost sum goes wrong.
Why it matters later
Class 10 Chapter 11 finds the area of a sector of a circle, a slice like a piece of pizza. Chapter 12 finds the curved surface area of cones and cylinders. Each answer ends in square units, and writing cm² or m² is part of a complete answer.
