Maths Basic and Maths Standard
Maths Basic and Maths Standard are two levels of the CBSE Class 10 Maths board paper, with the same syllabus but different kinds of question.
Standard has the subject code 041 and Basic has 241. Your child studies the same topics all year, then sits one of the two board papers.
What is the difference?
Both papers carry 80 marks and last 3 hours. The Class 10 Maths curriculum for 2026-27 sets one syllabus and one table of unit marks for both. How the 80 marks split by unit sets that table out. What changes between the levels is the mix of questions, out of 80 marks:
- Remember and understand: 43 marks in Standard, 60 in Basic.
- Apply: 19 marks in Standard, 12 in Basic.
- Analyse, evaluate or create: 18 marks in Standard, 8 in Basic.
So Basic has more marks for recall. Standard has more for using and judging ideas.
Does it matter for Class 11?
It can. Under a 2019 CBSE circular, a student who took Basic could take only Applied Mathematics in Class 11. A circular of 27 May 2025 relaxed this, if the head of the school agrees. It ends once CBSE's new scheme of studies is in place. So a student taking Basic now cannot be sure it will still apply. Ask the school.
Is the choice going away?
Yes. CBSE's scheme of studies says the two levels will be discontinued. Class 10 in 2026-27 is the last year a student may opt for Basic. ICSE has no such split. CISCE's syllabus for the 2028 exam sets one Maths paper. Maths Basic vs Standard: which should your child take goes through the choice in full.
