What you need to read and download here

No app, no minimum spec - what actually has to work, and what to try when something does not.

A laptop, a phone and a spiral notebook laid out on a dark wooden table

There is no app to install and no minimum device. This is a website, and it is built to work on the phone a parent already has rather than the laptop they might have. Still, a few things have to be true, and it is quicker to know them than to guess.

For reading

Any current browser - Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge - on a phone, tablet or computer. The pages are delivered as plain HTML, so the text is there before any script runs; if your browser has JavaScript switched off, or a script fails to load on a poor connection, the article still reads.

For downloading a paper

  • JavaScript needs to be on. The panel that takes your email and the code is an interactive component, and it cannot run without it.
  • You need to be able to receive email at the address you give, because that is where the code goes - how to download your first paper walks through the whole sequence.
  • A PDF viewer, to open the paper once it arrives. Every current browser has one built in; on a phone the file usually opens in whatever reads documents there.

If something will not work

  • Try the same link in a different browser first. It is the fastest way to tell a page problem from a browser problem.
  • A strict ad-blocker or privacy extension can stop the download panel opening. Pausing it for this site is usually the fix.
  • On a work or school network, outbound mail is sometimes filtered - which stops the code, not the site. A personal address is the easier route.
  • If the paper downloaded once and the link has since stopped working, that is expected after 48 hours - your download link expired covers what to do.

We do not publish a list of supported browser versions, because we would rather not claim a guarantee nobody is testing against. If something here will not work on a device you have, tell us what it is - that is more useful to us than a version number on a page.
