How a pre-board paper is checked online, step by step
How the board checks a Class 10 answer book, and how a practice paper is checked online against the same marking scheme.
To get your child's Class 10 pre-board paper checked online, your child writes it under exam conditions and uploads the answer sheet. On TRUpreBoards, our AI reads the script and reports what your child did at each step. It never gives the marks itself. Where a question cannot be marked cleanly, it is held for a human evaluator rather than guessed. This page shows how the board checks its papers, and how our check differs.
What does examiner-led evaluation mean?
It means an answer is marked by an examiner working from a written marking scheme, not from a feeling. This is how the board checks its own exams. The scheme lists the points each answer needs and the marks for each. The examiner gives marks for each correct step, not just the final answer. Our online check works from a written scheme too, but an examiner does not mark it by default. The section on who marks the paper explains this.
A school pre-board - the school's own practice board exam is checked by teachers, in the way the school decides. The board's rules do not cover it.
How does CBSE check a board answer sheet?
In a set order, written down in CBSE's Examination Bye-Laws. Each step has its own rule.
- The roll number is hidden. Each real roll number is changed to a made-up one before any examiner sees the book. Why examiners do not know whose paper it is explains this.
- The books go to evaluation centres chosen by the board, not to examiners' homes, except in special cases.
- An approved examiner marks each book against the marking scheme - the list of points and marks for each answer.
- A head examiner watches over every ten to fifteen examiners, to keep the marking the same.
- The marks go onto award lists, which are kept confidential, and the result is declared.
"The Head Examiner shall be responsible for ensuring uniform evaluation of answer books as per the final marking scheme."
How your answer sheet is actually checked follows one board answer book through all of this in more detail.
How can you get a practice paper checked online?
On TRUpreBoards it takes four steps, set out on our How it works page. Your child sits a previous-year or pre-board paper that is assigned to them.
- Choose the paper. A parent picks the board, subject and year. A paper is assigned and a date is set for the attempt.
- Write it. On that date your child writes the paper as in the exam hall: timed, and with no help.
- Upload it. Your child uploads the handwritten answer sheet, and it is read step by step.
- Get the report. It shows every lost mark, what the examiner expected in each question, and what to work on next.
Who actually marks the paper online?
The marks come from a written marking scheme, not from a model's opinion. For each paper, our team writes down how the marks split across the steps of each answer. That split follows the board's published marking scheme and answers. For ICSE, CISCE publishes the full working it expects rather than a mark for each line, so that split is written by our team. Our AI reads the answer sheet and records what your child did at each step. It never gives the marks itself. The step marks are then worked out from the split for that paper.
Where a question cannot be marked cleanly, it is held for a human evaluator rather than guessed.
For CBSE, the split follows the board's own step marks. How step marking works shows how a 3-mark answer is split into steps.
What does an online check not do?
- It is not the board's evaluation. CBSE's curriculum builds the result only from the board exam and the school's internal assessment.
- It does not predict the board result. What a readiness score can and cannot tell you explains why no score can.
- It does not compare your child with other children. The report is about one answer sheet.
One more point about the board's own process. The Bye-Laws use the word "moderation" only for question papers, checked before the exam. They have no clause on moderating marks, so we do not claim one. Why pre-board marks can be lower than board marks compares school and board marking in full.
