Is the second board exam compulsory? Should your child sit it?
The second CBSE Class 10 board exam is optional and cannot lower a mark already earned. How to decide whether it is worth it for your child.
Sit the second CBSE Class 10 board exam if you know why a subject went wrong, and a few weeks of work can fix it. The May exam is optional. It cannot lower a mark your child already has, because the better of the two counts. What it costs is time, effort and a fee.
Is the second board exam worth it?
It can be, because the second board exam carries no risk to the marks already earned. CBSE's press release on the 2026 second exam results says "the better of the two performances is considered for preparing the final result". A worse day in May does not undo a good day in February.
So the real question is not risk. It is whether your child can do better, and whether that is worth a spring spent on one subject again.
The second exam cannot lower a mark your child has earned. It can only replace it with a better one.
What does the second exam change, and what stays the same?
Only the written paper is sat again, in up to three subjects. They come from Science, Maths, Social Science and the languages. The rules for the two board exams set that limit.
The 20 school marks stay as they are. The school gives them once, before February, and they carry over to May. Why internal marks have only one attempt explains the reason.
The syllabus is the full one for the year, and the paper pattern is the same. The second exam is the same exam again, not an easier one.
When does sitting the second exam make sense?
- A subject was not cleared. Then there is little to decide. The May exam is where a Compartment result is cleared in the same year. What the passing rules actually say covers how that works.
- One subject sits well below the others. This is the clearest case for improvement. A single low paper may have a cause you can name. A topic was never learned, a section was left blank, or time ran out. A named cause can be worked on.
- A mark your child needs is close. Say a school asks for a set mark for a Class 11 stream. If your child is just short in a subject they can sit again, the choice is simple sums.
- The Maths level needs to change. In 2026, CBSE let students switch between Maths Standard and Maths Basic for the second exam. No other subject could be changed.
Who should not appear in the second board exam?
Some students cannot sit it at all. A student who missed three or more papers in February is placed in Essential Repeat. They take the main exam again the next year.
Others can sit it but may gain little. If the marks are close together in every subject, there may be no single cause to fix. Without a cause to work on, a second try is hard to plan.
Think about your child too. Weeks of study for one paper, while friends have finished, is a real cost. A calm no is as sound a choice as a planned yes.
What should you look at before deciding?
Two children can have the same mark for very different reasons. One never learned some topics. That takes real weeks of study. The other knew the work but lost marks on steps they did not write down. That can be quicker to fix.
A mark sheet cannot tell these apart. The marked answer book could, but you will not have it in time. For Class 10, the copy of the answer book is given only after the second exam's results.
So work from what you do have: the mark in each subject, the question paper, and your child's memory of it. Go through the paper question by question. How step marking works shows which steps carry marks, so you can guess where they went.
What does the second exam cost, and who applies?
The school registers your child, not you. For 2026, the CBSE circular on the second exam's registration set the fee in India at Rs 320 per subject. A late fee applied after the last date.
Say your child is registered and the fee is paid, but they miss the paper. Then the February result stands as final. Fees and dates are set again each year, so ask the school for the current circular.
Is there a second board exam for ICSE?
ICSE has its own improvement exam in the same year. The CISCE regulations for the ICSE exam allow up to three subjects, and the higher of the two marks counts. The same question applies: is there a cause you can fix? These rules are from CISCE's latest published edition, the one for the 2028 exam. Check the edition for your child's exam year.
So what is the honest answer?
Sit the second exam when you can name why a subject went wrong, and the weeks before May can change it. If the result fairly shows the year, not sitting is a sound choice too.
The second exam takes away the weight of a single February morning. It does that whether or not your child uses it. Knowing it is there is most of the benefit.
