Verification of marks
Verification of marks is a check that every answer was marked and the marks were added and copied correctly, without judging any answer again.
Verification is a check of the arithmetic, not of the answers. It asks whether any question was left unmarked, and whether the marks were added up and copied across correctly. To have an answer judged again, you need re-evaluation instead. You can ask for either, or both.
What to look for
CBSE's notice of 5 August 2026 lists checks to make on the photocopy of the answer sheet:
- Are all the extra answer sheets you used included?
- Was every question marked?
- Do the step marks for each answer add up to the mark in the margin?
- Was each answer's mark copied correctly onto the cover page?
- Does the cover total match the mark on your result?
A small example
CBSE gives this example itself. Question 5 earns 1, 1 and 1 for three steps, so it should total 3. But the margin shows 2. That is a totalling slip, and verification is the check that finds it.
In 2026 the fee was Rs 300 per answer book, refunded if marks went up. It opens only after the second board exam's results. Photocopy, verification and re-evaluation covers the full process.
ICSE calls this a recheck. CISCE's regulations for the 2028 exam say it must be asked for within four days of the results. It checks that all answers were marked and totalled, and the marks moved to the cover correctly.
